unit 3 assignment 2 (treatment first draft )
Treatment
My documentary is aimed
at the general public but to be more specific its main target audience girls
and boys from kids, teenagers to young adults along with men and women16-34. It
will be aimed at a mainstream audience because I want everybody to watch and
enjoy it not just a niche audience but a more general audience such as the
mainstream audience.
In order to target the
mainstream audience my documentary will contain popular music but not just any
specific type like just rock or rap, the music that will be used will be from
the charts therefore the mainstream audience will know it and will be drawn to
it. For kids and teenagers the footage of other kids their age (students from
Denton community college) will interest them and hook them, but I will also use
a rather more modern language instead of too specific just so they can relate
to it and not feel like it’s a documentary aimed at aged people.
My documentary will be
better for other young people because it will be relatable from the music
in it, language to its content.
The plot of my
documentary is simple, I will be explaining what goes on in the post
pre-production stages of the shows that Denton community college has, how they
prepare for them, who choreographs the dances, who picks which dancers that are
going to perform and how are they picked, how long and how hard do they
rehearse to be ready for the show, I will also be explaining the great
advantages that dance can offer to a community using my research such as it
gives the community and everyone involved in the
Show a sense of unity entertains people,
brings different societies together and many more….
The people that will take
part in my documentary will be all the senior staff that are involved in the
show at Denton Community College such as Claire Evans, James day and many more,
the dancers too will be part of it along with some of the general public
members that have been to any of the schools previous shows. My documentary
will be done as a participatory documentary as I will engage everyone involved
in as I either interview or hangout with him or her.
My audience will learn
the importance of dance to a community such as the research about the kids in
the refugee camps and how dance helped them escape their troubles and find happiness, they will learn all the work that goes in preparing a dance show at
Denton community college, how the staff and dancers at Denton community college
prepare and perform, how the fund the shows and promote them and they will also
learn how dance has impacted the lives at Denton community college but the
biggest lesson of all will be …..As long as community and society lives on
there will always be dance as it is the most absolute way that every community
or society celebrate or unite by dancing with each other, just like we learned
in my research about king James party and all his guests that danced all night
all different cultural dances such as ballroom and more.

unit 3 assignment 1 (upgraded version)
Documentary research
qualitative research : qualitative research is consisted of great detail such as interviews, film review...quantitative research:quantitative research is consisted of numbers, data and figures : box office numbers, audience number...
primary research: primary research is research that is taken from first hand for example: interview
secondary research: secondary research is research that is taken from other peoples opinion or work for example: internet , books, magazine
Making my documentary on “ the effect of music on today’s audience” the first research that would I would be required to do is production research, I would have to research my equipment as in which camera I would need to use , which mics ,or editing software would be the best for me. I could either use quantitative research or qualitative research ; qualitative research would inform me on people’s opinions of the equipment, the types of equipment and how powerful they are such as cameras and quantitative research would be the amount of cameras and other equipment and their cost I would need to make my documentary, as far as methods go I could use primary research as I ask fellow filmmakers about the equipment and their opinions on them or secondary research which would be reviews on the equipment online. But overall my choice will be to do some qualitative research over quantitative because no matter how many cameras I get they won’t be as to me if they’re not the right ones ,and my preferred method is primary over secondary simply because it is far more reliable and up to date .
During production I would also need the right personnel to
work with (crew) which would require some research, such as qualitative research to find out what specialists I need and what they do: camera man,
sound recorder… and also quantitative to know how many camera men I would need
and so on but I do think that qualitative research is a rich source of
information therefore I would know which crew members to get, getting the right
crew is far more important than getting many crew members. But of course Id
back It up with some primary research
because as it is reliable I would know about that person from his format
working colleagues and the information would be more accurate as when if I did
secondary research buy reading just his cv he or she could misguide me.
Location is also an important part of production so in order
to know about which location would suit my documentary I would use some
qualitative research online or magazines and some quantitative to know how far
those locations are and what the cost is to gain permition to shoot in those
places ,overall my final choice would be qualitative because as a great man
once said “numbers don’t lie” therefore it would be much better than
quantitative because it is much clearer easy to access , secondary research
would be my option too over primary because with the use of primary research as
I interview someone about a location they could give me the wrong directions so
secondary is my choice because Google maps is much more reliable than a stranger
on the corner of the road.
Content
After post production the reviews of my documentary would be
very important therefore qualitative research would help me find out what
people thought of it and I would use primary research to interview the audience
after viewing it , in order to find out how many people went to watch it and
how well it did quantitative research would help me find out the box-office
numbers and how many tickets the film sold ,in the end qualitative research
would be better than quantitative whiles researching reviews as it is much more
detailed but quantitative research would be better than qualitative research in
order to find out how many people went to watch it or their age group as it is
easy to access and easy to analyse. A better research method would be secondary
over primary because people could be wrong about the stats but going on the box
office site would pride us with accurate information.
Audience research
Before researching the audience you must be aware of their
categories and their characteristics along with the audience profiles such as
men 16-34, men abc1, men c2de, men 55+, women 16-34, and women abc1. Women
c2de, women 55+, housewives with children, children, boys & TV girls and TV.Quantitative research would be useful to research stats and data such as how many women watch a certain type of documentary or the percentage of the age groups that went to watch a similar documentary , qualitative research could be used to find out what type of audience would like your documentary whether its mainstreamers national geographic documentaries, alternatives who hates geographic documentaries and prefers political ones or niche who are quite specific on which documentary they watch , but researching an audience for my documentary quantitative research would be my option as it would provide me with information that is straight forward such as box office sales of other documentaries that are similar to mine , age viewing groups and more where qualitative would provide me with time consuming unnecessary information. secondary research would also be more profitable than primary as it would provide me with much more greater detailed information from sites and more.
conclusion
doing research for audiences, marketing and production is really important because it leads you to a successful project ,research on marketing helps you distinguish what audience is it you would want tot target and how to target them , marketing research helps you to find a great marketing strategy that's suitable to your project and would lead to success such as box office success and production research helps your product come to live in a much organised and professional way such as researching the right crew, equipment and more.. but of course all these research are research differently ; some are well researched better with quantitative than qualitative research such as box office sales and others are researched better with qualitative research than quantitative as qualitative would possess much more information for example film reviews . methods are the same too secondary outweighs primary in a case of finding out information easily with greater detail and primary research is better than secondary in a case of finding out up-to-date information , it is important to k now when to use which.

unit 3 research techniques notes
describe it -pass
use an example-merit
compare example and decide which is better- distinction
types of research
qualitative- opinions from people for example : film review , discussion , reaction to television programme.
quantitative: numbers and data, for example: audience viewing figures, dvd sales, box office sales, audience breakdown by group
advantages of qualitative :
. results guide a project to success ( feedback )
. can inform future research
. its a rich source of information
disadvantages of qualitative
. can be tricky to get exact results
. findings are a result of lots of variables (where, who and when)
. has the impression of being less valid
advantages of quantitative
. easy to analyse (clear results from graphs, charts etc).
. facts can be used inn your favour
disadvantages of quantitative
. results are without detail - binary usually
. doesn't inform you for future research
research method
primary research- research undertaken by yourself or your group- first hand
.interviews , focus groups, questionnaires, participating in internet forums.
secondary research- previous research undertaken by others that you can use to inform your own research
. book, internet, magazine, reference books, archive footage, photo library, online articles, searching internet forums
data gathering agencies- certain agencies are set up to gather and publicised information
.barb (broadcasting audience ratings board) - tv rating
primary research is
adv:reliable , up to date.
dis: time consuming, expensive, not easily accsessible
secondary research
adv: inexpensive, easy to access, immediate, it can be greater detail
dis: quickly out of date, can be unreliable, may not answer everything,
purpose of research:- content- the story, what its going to be about, what sources of information might you need- interviewees? what kind of data will be the best: qualitative
equipment: you will need quantitative date and a bit of qualitative
crew: quantitative , primary research or secondary
cast: qualitative
audience research:- audience profiles- can be broken into different groups:
. socio-economic status
a - upper middle class - doctor
b - middle class - team leader
c1 - lower middle class - teacher
c2 skilled working class - tradesman
d - working class - factory workers
e - lowest level of substance - state pensioners
geodemographics/ regional identity: identifying one self by nationality
age : the age group that people associate themselves with could be defined as an age range, such as 15-20 or as a descriptive grouping such as teenager, young adult, middle ages, senior citizen.
gender: males or females
sexuality: aimed at both
race/ethnicity: people may choose to define themselves in relationship to geography
mainstream: loves x factor and other equally uplifting shows
alternative:hates x factor and prefers.....
niche: lives in a tiny little world
audience research which includes...
market research:
. competition _ what's already out there - successful documentaries already out, documentaries with similar content
. competitor analysis -why were competitor documentaries successful? content style , film maker/presenter
. advertising placement - how should the documentary be marketed? viral videos, trailers, depends on who
. what kind of data is best for this both for different reason
example " the first bit of research we undertake maybe some production research into documentaries content-production research is any research that relates to the producing of a media product such as the content equipment cast or crew .
one topic we may be interested in is ... we could start with some secondary research on.., this would be the best place to start as it is easy to access and expensive. for the content qualitative data will be better option over quantitative as it is rich in detail and gives us the potential for further research into the plot of the documentary" - example of a paragraph
research plan : have your documentary as a starting point
no more that 1000 words
deadline: 18/11/13 monday
using examples: why is it a good examples ( it may not be the first one you dind?)
is it easy to analyse
why did you choose that example over others
how does the example change/confirm your understanding
opening- whats the plan
production: qualitative
quantitative
